BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY…How It’s Done.
Local anesthesia with sedation is normally used for surgery on both eyelids and keeps you totally comfortable during the procedure. The incision placement is as follows for the upper and lower eyelids: Upper Eyelid Surgery involves incisions that are hidden in the crease of the upper eyelid. Lower Eyelid surgery involves incisions placed either inside the lower eyelid or just below the eyelash line. Dr. Bloom works through these access points to reposition fat, tighten muscles and remove excess skin, if needed. This process restores an improved eyelid contour. Again, fat is removed/repositioned, muscles tightened and excess skin is removed. The scars on both eyelids blend in with the natural creases of the eyelids.
AFTER SURGERY
When you wake up should expect the following and you should follow these instructions after going home:
1. There will be some swelling, bruising, numbness and paleness
2. You can expect some discomfort that is easily managed with oral pain medication
3. Cold compresses should be used as instructed
4. Incision sites may be irritated for a couple of days only
5. The eyes heal well and fairly quickly (1-2 weeks average)
6. Itchiness and dryness is common, but resolves quickly also
7. You need to sleep with your head elevated for a few nights
8. As healing takes place…all discomfort and signs of surgery begin to move away…usually over a few days time.
9. Plan to give it a few good 1-2 weeks to see the “real results” as complete healing takes time!

What Anesthesia is Used During Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) Surgery?
This will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation to ensure you are comfortable with your options and make a good decision. Local anesthesia and sedation are generally used.
How Long Does Blepharoplasty Surgery Take?
Eyelid surgery usually takes about 1 hour or longer, depending on what needs to be repaired. Dr. Bloom will be able to give you a time frame when your treatment plan has been designed and he knows exactly what’s involved.
Does Blepharoplasty Surgery Leave Scars?
All incisions involve scars. However, Dr. Bloom uses more refined techniques that allow him to inconspicuously hide the incisions in the natural creases of the eyelids. They actually fade over time.
Is Blepharoplasty Surgery Painful?
There will be some discomfort, but Dr. Blooms’ patients rarely complain of pain. You will experience swelling and bruising, itchiness and dry eyes. This is uncomfortable and easily managed with oral pain medication and cool compresses, but rarely do our patients complain of severe pain.
How Long Before I Will See the Real Results of my Blepharoplasty?
Visible results vary with each patient based upon the extensiveness of the procedure. Healing continues under the surface for quite some time. As swelling and bruising resolves, results can be seen and within a few weeks you will be looking like yourself…albeit a younger version.
Will Insurance Pay for Blepharoplasty Surgery?
Not unless it is deemed medically necessary because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. You need to check with your insurance provider about this. We do have financing today that covers these procedures and can be set up on a payment plan. Ask about it in our Business Office.
