FACIAL IMPLANTS

The nose is the most commonly broken facial bone…all it takes is a single blow to the midface.
When the nose is broken, the septum is usually deviated also. Injuries to the nose can increase nasal obstruction, congestion, cause loss of smell and trigger snoring. Motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, falls and fights are the most common causes of broken noses and deviated septums. If the nose looks like it did before the injury, surgery may not be necessary, but if correction is needed, it requires expertise and skill because overall facial appearance can change with a crooked, broken nose. Nasal fractures often cause humps or bumps, as well as asymmetry. The teeth and eyes may also be affected when there is a nasal fracture. Swelling may distort vision. It’s critical to be seen immediately when facial trauma occurs. Then, you should be seen by Dr. Bloom as soon as possible.
Functional nasal surgery restores normal function and appearance to a broken nose and midface.

IS FUNCTIONAL NASAL SURGERY RIGHT FOR YOU?
Anyone with a fractured nose or other facial trauma injury should see Dr. Bloom, as soon after the trauma as possible, to be diagnosed and start the correct treatment. Surgery is not always necessary and in those instances, Dr. Bloom discusses your best options and individualizes a treatment plan for you. Every treatment and surgery is “tailored” to the individual because one nose does not fit every face.

FUNCTIONAL NASAL SURGERY…HOW IT’S DONE.
If nasal reconstruction surgery is required, Dr. Bloom uses many of the same techniques used for rhinoplasty surgery. Septoplasty is performed to correct any septal deviations. After surgery, a nasal splint is typically worn for about 7 days to keep the nose stabilized and protected. Swelling, bruising and discomfort is to be expected, but is easily managed with oral pain medication and cool compresses.

AFTER SURGERY…What to Expect:
1. You will need to rest in bed with your head elevated for the first day
2. You will need to sleep with head elevated for a couple of weeks until swelling resolves
3. Discomfort is normal and can be managed with oral pain medication and cool compresses
4. Avoid strenuous activities for 2-3 weeks while healing takes place – this includes sports, lifting, bending, stooping and straining 5. Keep your post-operative appointments…they are critical

Frequently Asked Questions:

What Anesthesia is Used for Nasal Surgery?
Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia will be used depending upon the choices made during your consultation with Dr. Bloom.

How Long Does Functional Nasal Surgery Take?
Simple procedures can take as little as 45 minutes while more complex ones may take as long as 3-4 hours. Complexity and techniques determine the time frame.

Where Are Incisions Placed for Nasal Surgery?
They can be inside or outside the nose depending upon the type of procedure needed to correct your deformities. Endonasal techniques place incisions inside the nose. External approaches place a small incision outside on the underside of the nose. Dr. Bloom hides them as inconspicuously as possible.

Are There Scars With Nasal Surgery?
Yes. Incisions result in scars. Dr. Bloom uses the most advanced techniques to minimize visible scarring and those that do occur are well hidden and fade into nearly invisible thin threads over time.

Can The Surgery be Redone if the Results Are Not Desirable?
Yes, but that rarely occurs with Dr. Bloom’s patients. In the event a patient comes in, who is unhappy with a previous surgery, Dr. Bloom can perform a “revision” surgery to correct the defects and achieve the desired results. He is an expert who has been trained by some of the world’s most renowned surgeons…he gets outstanding results.

FACIAL PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEON
Choosing a surgeon is a serious task and should not be taken lightly. A good rapport, a clear understanding and solid trust is important before entrusting your care to any physician. In addition to medical school, internships and the other rigors of preparing to be a surgeon, Dr. Bloom was privileged to learn from the masters through a “fellowship program.” Fellowship training involves working with renowned surgeons who are true experts in their areas of specialization. Dr. Bloom is knowledgeable, skilled, qualified and considers it a privilege to help his patients by employing his special techniques and ability…to change lives positively!
