Rosacea is a condition that most commonly affects the skin of the face in adults. It is characterized by flushing, the appearance of veins in sun-exposed areas of the face, pimples, and most commonly by a generalized redness. Rosacea most commonly affects light-skinned people beginning in the late 20 to 30s, although it can appear for the first time in the forties of fifties. The cause of rosacea is unclear, although it is quite clear that the sun plays a major role in the development of rosacea. People with rosacea may have flushing and redness only, or develop pimples which can often become severe. People with severe pimples can get increased growth of oil glands on the nose called rhinophyma. The areas affected by rosacea most often are the cheeks, nose, chin and central forehead. It can rarely affect other areas such as the eyes.
Treatment of rosacea involves topical and oral medications. The vascular lasers can do wonders to improve rosacea by removing the large spider veins and generalized redness associated with this condition. This may often take a few laser treatments to achieve significant clearance, although most people see a significant improvement after only a single treatment. Studies have shown that laser treatment can even help the pumps and pimples associated with rosacea.
